Helping At Home Over the Holidays

Thank you for your support over the term.  We hope you have a relaxing break.

Some Reminders
- we will need parent help for the Wigram Trip and PMP next term as well as general classroom support.  Let us know if you can help
- your $5.80 contribution for the Wigram Trip is due by day one to the office

- we have new writing books to encourage the children to write longer, more exciting stories, your $1.50 contribution towards this has been added to your school account

Writing
  • encourage your child to listen for and use interesting words. Having a wide range of words will help your child create stories which will increase in complexity.
  • use technology. Text messages and emails are a form of writing even if the language is not always standard English.
  • use computers if your child isn’t keen on writing. They don’t have to think about the presentation of their work and editing does not require a complete re-write. Spell-check helps, too.
  • play card and board games and complete difficult crosswords and word puzzles.
  • create a message board. This could be done with magnetic letters and words or a whiteboard/pinboard. The messages might be instructions, reminders or praise for a job well done, as well as examples of work. Encourage your child and other family members to respond with messages, too.
Maths
    • play games with cards or dice that involve counting and adding
    • if you are travelling play number plate cricket - add the last numbers on the number plates of cars travelling in different directions

    • involve your child in cooking - talk about halves and quarters and measuring
    • skip count together
    • count forwards and backwards
    Reading
      • read, read, read!
      • read signs when you are travelling
      • play language games that involve letters and sounds - eye-spy
      • visit the library
      • talk about characters, setting, plot
